John Vassiliou has worked with McGill and Co since 2010. His experience covers all aspects of UK immigration law, British nationality law, EEA free movement law, the Refugee Convention, and the European Convention on Human Rights.
John leads the firm’s busy Court of Session practice as instructing solicitor in judicial reviews and appellate work. He advises clients worldwide on business and entrepreneurial migration and routes to permanent settlement in the UK. He also represents clients in appeals at both the First-tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber. He has worked on cases at the UK Supreme Court and at the European Court of Human Rights. He is adept at litigation, and in the current landscape of restricted appeals with focus on judicial review, his ability to think laterally and strategically has provided a real advantage in this demanding area. His strategic approach has assisted a great many clients, often faced with seemingly intractable problems. Examples of John’s judicial review work include leading challenges against certification of human rights and asylum claims, Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) refusals, refusals to grant British citizenship, and Home Office maladministration.
John has particular expertise of British nationality laws and UK ancestry having successfully resolved a number of complex cases requiring historical nationality status traces. He acted as instructing solicitor in the landmark nationality case of Advocate General for Scotland v Romein UKSC 6 at the UK Supreme Court which set the precedent that all children born between 1949 and 1983 to British women can now register as British citizens by descent.
John was a key contributor to the 2nd Reissue of The Laws of Scotland: Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia Immigration Law Chapter and regularly blogs for Free Movement, a widely-read and well-respected source of updates, commentary and advice on immigration and asylum law.
A graduate of the University of Glasgow, John is fluent in Greek, and has completed studies abroad at the University of Queensland in Australia and Hong Kong University in China. He is a member of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA) and is an affiliate member of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet (WS).
