Iain Halliday joined McGill & Co in 2014 after graduating from the University of Glasgow with First-class honours and completing the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Aberdeen. He first studied immigration and asylum law during the third year of his law degree, which he spent studying abroad at the University of Helsinki completing further studies in this area of law in his final year of his degree.
During his time at the firm, Iain has: been involved with the preparation and submission of numerous immigration and nationality applications to the Home Office; conducted numerous appeal hearings at the First-tier Tribunals (Immigration & Asylum Chamber) including complex human rights appeals, appeals against deportation, appeals against refusals to issue EEA residence cards, and asylum appeals; and has assisted Counsel with appeals to the Upper Tribunal and actions for judicial review at the Court of Session. He regularly assists clients with complex legal issues ranging from the posting of international workers to family migration problems.
Iain has successfully represented clients facing deportation and removal and regularly processes complicated EEA residency applications, British Nationality applications, and private and family life applications. He has been involved in several cases concerning the best interests of the child. He regularly assists clients with Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) and Tier 2 applications, providing invaluable advice and guidance on the requirements and necessary documents.
Iain is a member of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association and a member of the Law Society of Scotland's Immigration and Asylum Committee and has been involved in drafting submissions to Parliamentary Committees at both Westminster and Holyrood. He was shortlisted for the Trainee of the Year Award at the 2016 Law Awards for Scotland.
