The Government have announced that they will double the number of visas available to leading figures and individuals who show promise in technology, science, art and creative industries. Previously only 1,000 visas were allocated in this category, known as Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent). However this is to be doubled to 2,000. The Government have indicated that the number of people who will be permitted entry under this route is being increased to: "ensure that more highly skilled people who enhance the UK’s economy can come to, and work in, this country."
There are two stages to a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) application. The first is an application for endorsement to one of the following organisations:
- Tech City UK
- Arts Council England
- The British Academy
- The Royal Society
- The Royal Academy of Engineering
The criteria for endorsement can be found in Appendix L of the immigration rules. The organisation will decide whether the applicant has sufficient experience and qualifications to show that they are a world leader in their field and are exceptionally talented.
Once an applicant has been endorsed, they can then progress to the second stage: making the visa application to UKVI for a visa in the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) category.
